Urban trees and bird migration

Scientists in America have shown that urban trees, woods and forests help many migrating birds journey between winter and breeding sites. The scientists tagged over 100 birds and were able to monitor where they rested and for how long. As a result they were able to see how important urban green spaces were.

Forests could stop being carbon sinks

The ability of the worlds forests to sequester carbon dioxide may come to a halt if global temperatures continue to rise, according to 35 of the worlds top forestry scientists. In fact the scientists predict that in the coming decades, forests could actually release large amounts of CO2, adding to the global warming problem rather than helping to slow it.

Old Forests are valuable Carbon Sinks

Researchers in Belgium have found that old forests sequester carbon, contradicting the belief that they were carbon neutral. Sebastiaan Luyssaert at the University of Antwerp has shown that these old forests may account for some 10% of the earths carbon sinks.
