Urban trees and bird migration

Scientists in America have shown that urban trees, woods and forests help many migrating birds journey between winter and breeding sites. The scientists tagged over 100 birds and were able to monitor where they rested and for how long. As a result they were able to see how important urban green spaces were.

Tree planting at Jubilee Park

Tree Wardens in the Waterlooville area helped the BCTV voluntary organisation plant trees at Jubilee Park recently. Most of the work however, was done by youths from the PETA training organisation, who helped plant some 150 tree whips in various locations of the park. Rachel Moroney from BCTV gave a quick lesson in planting the whips, before about 10 youths and some tree wardens marched off with spades and gloves to do some planting.

Woodland biodiversity loss

New research is showing that some English woodlands are becoming homogenised, with a subsequent loss in biodiversity. Sally Keith a researcher at Centre for Ecology and Hydrology has looked at records of some 65 woods surveyed in the 1930s. She found that although the number of species were similar, they are less distinctive today.  Pollution and changes in management are blamed.
